AnandTech’s tests illustrated a 4% increase in performance when using 3DNow! accelerated Quake 2 OpenGL drivers as opposed to using the standard OpenGL drivers under Quake 2 with the K6-3 test system’s Riva TNT video card. Ouch, only 4%

If your ALI board has 512 KB of L2 cache, I believe the cacheable memory range is 512 MB. For a fair comparison, you really should use the same hardware for both the slot 1 and super7 motherboards, otherwise the results will be open to scrutiny. I suspect the results of the K6-III-550 will …

That's a cute little GX1 Geode motherboard. The only advantage I see of it over the ECS board is the onboard Ethernet port. It is also unique in that it had the option for 16 MB of RAM onboard.

Did you try your fried SXL in other motherboards? Was the SXL 33/66 QFP only? If so, ever see one on a QFP-to-PGA adapter with a VRM? Did you run any burn-in tests with a DLC at 40 MHz and the fastest memory timings? I wonder you really need to step the timing down one notch to pass a 24-hr burn-in? …

Huh, as noted previously, we probably need to adapt a GX or GXi chip to run in this socket for proper 4x operation. This is probably more trouble than it is worth, and it may not even work without some redesign. Oh well...

What happens if you try short, short, open for JP8 pins 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6, respectively? The GXM datasheet lists two possible 4x modes, one as 4x (testing) and the other as 4x. I believe the undocumented jumper setting noted above may be for the regular 4x mode. However this board may be very timing …

From my experience, replacing the crystal on boards newer than a 386 leads to timing interrupt problems with the diskette drive, amongst other things. There might be a program to soft change the multiplier on the CPU. I'd start by looking for this. I know the Evergreen program for the Cyrix 5x86 …

I'd have never thought there would be a cache timing dependence on graphic card selection. This opens a whole new avenue for exploration. Perhaps it is a VLB-only occurrence?
