Be sure to test them with a stand-alone tester. These have a 10-% DOA failure rate.

I've sent you a compilation of all my Cyrix 6x86-based programs. One of these programs may be able to change the multiplier. I have never had to use software to do this before, so I cannot be certain.

I have witnessed false BIOS indentification of processor speed and even false FSB speed from chkcpu, although it is not common.

Have you tried manually writing to the CPU registers, either by direct wiring of hi and lo pins, or using software? I know, for example, that I am able to use software to adjust the multiplier of the Cyrix 5x86 between 1x, 2x, 3x, and 4x, although a certain order of operation for going between …

Are you sure that jumper setting is an 80 MHz FSB and not an 83.3 Mhz FSB? My socket 7 and 486 board have an 83 MHz undocumented FSB option. I used an oscilloscope to confirm this. Does this board with with the original Cyrix 6x86 at 2x40?

Very thourough work! Could you bench the Cyrix 6x86 at 40x2? Would you be able to bench the Cyrix 6x86 at 33x4 if you manually set the appropriate CPU pins to HI/LO? Since you are comparing the two motherboards to each other directly, you could also use Win95 if it is more convenient. As suspected, it was the combination of memory speed and quantity being too much for the VIA chipset. I reduced the memory size from 4x512MB to 1x512MB and XP installed flawlessly. I first tried a Matrox G200A AGP card using 4x512MB, and install froze.

When I wrote that sentance, I did not have games in mind. I was actually reflecting back to my experience with web browsers, like Firefox and Opera. To me, images, videos, and scrolling through text on a browser window is "graphic stuff".
