Re: Suicidal behaviour: Going into Windows 11

in Milliways
I was thinking about this. If you have to have a micro$soft account to use Win11, I am willing to bet it requires MFA? So what happens if your phone is lost, stolen, compromised, whatever - at the point you would not even be able to get into your computer to access your files?

Re: Suicidal behaviour: Going into Windows 11

I think that I may become even more entrenched with older computers. Hence my desire to fix the capacitor plague board (another thread.) That board used to run like a 2006 or 2007 version of PC linux. It was my internet computer for a long time - until it got to where I really couldn't get on the …

I appreciate the irony here. I am on a computer website bashing computers. Back into the 90s I was so into computers - always upgrading hardware - more memory, faster processors, bigger drives, etc. Not sure what happened. Actually I DO no what happened - it started with XP

Re: problems with dell optiplex

After some reading I downloaded the dell OS recovery app. Haven't installed it yet. As I understand things it downloads the image and burns it to a USB that you can boot from. So I guess up to that point no changes are made to your system. So I suppose no harm done up to that point. Does anyone have …

Re: It outsourcing everything

I really don't like idea of having an "account" in general. Every time I get some spam text about my account with Amazon compromised I just laugh - because I have never ordered from amazon. That is just another way your information can be stored, hacked, compromised, etc. And what happens when your …

I think I am glad I didn't get rid of that board. I *could* send it out for recapping. The heatsink is missing a fan. But that's nexus cpu cooler - the fan screws into the top of the heatsink with some plastic screws. I *think* it's a standard 50mm fan and I might be able to find a replacement. Was …

It outsourcing everything

This is the way things seem to be going. Once upon a time we had our own webmail server (went away more than a decade ago) and our own webpage server (more recently gone) I am webmaster for our department - drupal (groan). I can't just upload a file and create a link to it - has to be in a " …

Re: End of an era - Anandtech is shutting down

With all the talk about the end of an era - Just a "cheap thought" but not such a sudden thing. Hobbyist computing has been declining for two decades. Think about it - the days of stores that just sold computers and computer parts are LONG gone. What retail store even stocks computer parts anymore? …

Re: problems with dell optiplex

Well I did some looking around - there is a menu with F12 that could have SWORN had system restore option but I am not seeing it now. Maybe better to just leave it alone anyway. I could always try to get a "real" office 2010 disk off ebay 😉

problems with dell optiplex

in Milliways
Wonder if anyone could offer a suggestion The office on my dell opttiplex has stopped working. I think I bumped the computer - on boot got a message saying it needed to run scandisk. I though everything was okay, but at least this is broken. Here's the deal - I got the whole thing used maybe four …
