dead awe64 gold

in Milliways
Hello, I got a nice haul of ISA cards off Ebay. The only one of the bunch I *really* wanted was the Awe64 gold. However, that is the one that is not working. This isn't Friday the 13th???? Oddly enough, the computer will not POST wit the card in place. No video, no beep, nothing. I tried in three …

Re: Did anyone see this on eBay?

in Milliways
Well I can maybe see replacing a varta battery, if the board has pins for an external battery (and maybe even if it doesn't). But my understanding is those Dallas chips have more than a battery inside, and you can't simply remove them. So if it's bad and you can't get a replacement..........

Re: Did anyone see this on eBay?

Hi Guys... I remember seeing it, but I thought the price was still high (and I am sure I will get some criticism for this, but I don't think shuttle boards are all that great.) Also, I'd stay away (1) boards with one of those Dallas chips, and (2) boards with varta batteries. Just my two cents..... …

Help! Very strange shutdown problem

in PC Emulation
I have a very, very strange shutdown problem with win98. The board is a tyan trinity 1854. I recently changed out the CPU cooler with a slightly bigger/quiteter one. For those of you familiar with the board, it has both slot1 and socket 370. I removed the plastic mounts/guides for the slot 1 to make …

Dallas Real-Time Clock

in Milliways
I am curious - would you stay away from boards with a Dallas Real-Time Clock. I was looking at a board - it looks like a great board except for that thing. Don't those have a battery inside them? If that's bad aren't you pretty much out of luck???

Re: ebay drying up?

in Milliways
The 486 stuff is just ridiculously expensive - and IMHO the ones coming up for sale are not what I would consider the better boards. I am afraid the socket 7/370 stuff will eventually go that route....

Re: Ireland enacts SOPA!

Let me be devil's advocate for a minute, Would we have artists or musicians if no one could get paid for it? You might feel differently if it was *your* material being posted all over the internet, and you not collecting a dime for any of it;

ebay drying up?

Does anyone else get stuff of Ebay? Seems to me like it is drying up. The socket 7 stuff is getting harder to find than it used to be,

asus a7v600

in Milliways
Hello, I just got an Asus A7V600 board off ebay. I had mentioned this board before and and some people had some prior experience with it. Can anyone suggest the best processor? I know the bus can run at 400 MHz, but would I be better off sticking with a CPU that runs at 333? Or if get a CPU that …

painting a power supply

in Milliways
I have spray-painted cases before - no problem I have a rusted-out power supply (part of a case I got at a flea-market, looks like it was stored in someone's garage) I wonder if I could take the power supply apart and spraypaint it? Probably not worth the trouble.... (but it would look cool)

Re: hub or switch?

in Milliways
Thanks for all the input guys I have been doing some reading on all this - what I was really talking about setting up was a linux router/gateway to connect a network to the internet )

Re: hub or switch?

in Milliways
Well this may sound simplistic, but the ethernet card only has one connection and goes to the cable modem, so how are you going to connect it to another PC without a second card? The last time I tried something like this, it wasn't connected to the internet, so assign a couple of IP addresses and it …

Re: hub or switch?

in Milliways
Thanks for all the input guys This is all looking harder than I originally thought. What I wanted to do was put a second internet card in a linux box, and the it for samba or possibly internet-sharing. It recognizes the second card, but is not showing it as active, even if I switch the internet …

hub or switch?

in Milliways
Okay, I want to ask a very basic question. The last experience I had setting up a network was with 10base2 (the old coax stuff). I am now wanting to set up a network with 10baseT. So for a basic setup do I need a hub or switch?
