Re: Robert Miles died at 47

Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman wrote: The trance producer died after struggling against cancer (source). Well, his probably most well-known song is Children, but my most favorite remains Naked and Sacred, sung by Maria Nayler. RIP, Robert Miles. I'm not familiar with his work, but DAMN that is way too …

Re: Bored of vintage computing?

in Milliways
In my case, vintage computing is not about collecting or hoarding stuff I won't ever use. I use what I have, get what I need and keep a few spares just in case, I was never interested in getting rare hardware to have it in display somewhere. This keeps me from becoming overwhelmed and tired of …

Re: Bored of vintage computing?

I don't know that I'd say I'm bored exactly, but I can definitely identify with feeling very "meh" about things these days. I'm in my 40s now, I'm very conscious of the fact that I may not have too many good years left, in fact I narrowly dodged my first heart attack last summer and am trying to get …

Re: AMD drops the mic

My primary interest in this CPU is nothing to do with games, I want it for CG/effects/animation etc. Assuming the 16 and 32 core parts are not ridiculously expensive (I have hope given the 8 core parts start at roughly $300) then I look forward to being able to put together a 32 to 64 core box on …

Re: AmigaOS4 and related hardware

Good question. I'd assume if PPC hardware is at least reasonably current, you could do most anything you could do on a modern Intel or AMD machine. When did they stop making PPC Macs? Around 2004 or 2005? Basically forever ago in computer time but not that long ago compared to people that still use …

Re: Audigy front panel bays - general questions

You probably mean the external Audigy Drive that came with the Audigy Platinum eX ? http://ask.creative.com/wwimages/general/product_guides/Audigy_PLT_EX_drive.jpg I have wondered what they look like inside. Could just be an Audigy Drive with very little added on at the rear. It came with a fairly …

Audigy front panel bays - general questions

So I finally managed to find one of these and picked it up but when it arrived, it turned out to be an external break-out box and not the internal bay. It's about the same size so it was very difficult to tell from the photo. It actually looks like it would still fit in a 5.25" drive bay but of …

Man, Intel is going to get spanked hard: http://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/02/09/amd-ryzen-prices-revealed-massive-blow-to-intel/#5f192e7b6e7c I know what is on my list for my next upgrade. If an 8 core part is just over $300, then there is a good chance a 16 core part will come in at $ …

Re: What machines did you use in High School?

in Milliways
This is what we were using through my school career: Highschool: 286 and 386 systems mainly with the rare 486. There were also a couple XT systems (in the CAD lab, of all places...SMH) College: Sun workstations, SGI Indigos, 486 and Pentium/Pentium Pro clones Systems owned personally during that …

Connecting external midi device to PC

What sort of midi cables do I need to connect a midi device to a soundcard? I did a search on Amazon but only found the round mini-DIN midi cables, not the gameport to midi type cables. I'm assuming that is the type you actually need.

Re: 386/486 as main pc

Your question really all depends on what you want to do. I would want at minimum a graphical multitasking 32 bit OS like OS/2 2.11 or some type of BSD, I don't think there are any Linux versions anymore that will run on a 386. OS/2 2.11 would at least let you run multiple DOS programs at the same …

Re: Retro 3D Graphics/CGI Hardware/Software?

Before about 1990 or 1991 there really wasn't much available for 3D on the PC. Autocad, Turbocad, maybe other more obscure CAD packages. Povray, of course. Deluxe Paint for bitmaps and such. Nothing really animation wise, other than Disney Animator and Autodesk Animator Pro and I think certain …

Re: Retro 3D Graphics/CGI Hardware/Software?

@Snorg THANK YOU! I'm definitely going to head on over to that Mashek website and maybe pick something up from there! I had no idea there were still so many NOS systems available! With regard to DOS, I'll look for some of those programs. Thanks so much! You're welcome. The SGI ecosystem is …
