Re: Computer hard crashes on DOS games

in DOS
Loading Jemm puts the CPU in protected mode (virtual x86 mode), that's probably what windows is complaining about. Well, the thing is that EMM386 also puts the CPU in protected mode. Apparently Windows knows how to gracefully take over from EMM386, though. Probably because EMM386 is also made by MS …

Re: Game skills you really suck at?

in Milliways
I seem to suck at economic simulations and/or micromanagement of commerce and development, like in most games by Impressions - somehow I tend to go downhill very fast. Occasionally, I lose the patience to continue. Strange thing is that, I really do like to play such games. Caesar 3! Holy shit that …

My experience with wine is that Diablo 2 runs OK. Not much else. Don't give up on wine so fast :-) I played a bunch of games on wine, even the modern ones usually work satisfactory. Just make sure you get the right DX-components and it will (usually) work just fine. I'll have to try it again …

Re: Should I buy these ? RGB component cable...

in Milliways
If it's only 3x BNC, you'll have to use sync-on-green, and IIRC only ATI cards support that. I have a few monitors with 5x BNC but I don't have the appropriate cable. I do see some ghosting around sharp edges with a normal VGA cable, maybe using the BNC input would improve that. Most VGA cables …

Re: Computer hard crashes on DOS games

in DOS
However I'm getting a strange error during Windows booting up. While I can use the DOS mode, loading Windows results in (pardon my shabby translation) "Can't start Windows, when a, currently used, protected mode program is running. Close this protected mode program and try running Windows again." …

You can disable all that other stuff, I only use MGE for the fps counter, FOV and AA setting and it's not slowing anything down. What exactly doesn't work about the FPS optimizer? A friend of mine uses it on Win7 and as far as I know it runs OK.

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

Could this have been a bjorked .ini file for Morrowind all along ? I'm thinking so as this would be replaced when reinstalling the game. That must have been the problem then I guess. I did look through the ini file but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. I usually put a lot of exclamation …

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

Another update, and likely the last one: I installed an older version of the nVidia drivers, 196.21, that was the oldest I could find on my pc. That slightly improved the framerate, by about 5fps. Still not much but a bit better. However I lost all settings for individual programs in the driver …

I used the .bat file in the link swaaye posted, what it does is extract the DX8 files from the XP cd (finding that CD took most of the time XD), then install them in safe mode. DXDIAG confirmed I was on 8.1b. And yes, this system runs XP. Most other programs and games run fine on this system. Even …

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

So, I just removed DX9, that took quite a while. With vanilla DX8.1b I tried MW again... nothing changed. And after reinstalling DX9... nothing changed. This is driving me mad. I used to play this game on this same system, with an even slower P4, less RAM, and a Radeon 9800. That wasn't very fast …

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

in Windows
The CPU is somewhat of a bottleneck believe it or not. But you should be more in the 30s for frame rate. I never used P4, but I do know that I played and finished Morrowind on athlon XP 1700+ witd DDR 266 and there was no stuttering even with Radeon 8500. It must be some kind of a bug or …

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

see if processor affinity helps edit: it doesnt ps: I'm only getting 40fps on a much faster pc I get twice that in oblivion I tried that, disabled one core (actually half a core XD) in taskmgr. In my case the framerate didn't change at all, but loading saved games / new areas took about 10 times …

Re: 133MHz is the best!

I do have Transcend ECC ram rated for PC100 and 3-3-3 timings. In dos and memtest86 it works fine at 133MHz bus and 2-2-2. I'm guessing the 3dfx card doesn't like it as I see some black boxes and lines scattered across the screen when booting into windows.

Re: Morrowind is sloooow!

I did have 4xAA forced in the driver configuration, yes. Just now I disabled that, changed the screen res from 1280x960 to 800x600, disabled vsync and removed MGE. Still the same result: 15fps at minimum view distance, 10fps at max. 🙁
