With enhancements I meant PIO > 0, multi-word DMA and UDMA modes. What happens when you mount the ISO in Windows using Daemon Tools? And to be sure it's not caused by fragmentation, you could try Defraggler or some other defrag tool that shows fragmentation of individual files.

Great idea, I can record some later today on an YMF-719. Supposedly that is a standard OPL3 with zero filtering. I can also make some ESFM recordings. I have two or three ESS sound cards, one of which is integrated in a laptop and that might be slightly different.

Convert the image to ISO and use SHSUCDHD. If you need the audio tracks then burn it to a CD, there is no way (yet) to play digital CD audio in DOS.
