Yep, that's it! It's down to 11.6V (should be 14.9V) When I desolder everything from the B+ rail it's still 11.6, so no shorts. Resistors and diode stuff seems good, and I tried replacing the big transistor with a new MJ15004 I found in my parts pile. Still 11.6. So the only remaining option is that …

Way too many Maxtor HDDs. And a single Deskstar. My friend's X-fi titanium-something PCIe failed in a peculiar way last month. It still works, but if he turns the volume up too high, it locks up after a minute and emits a high-pitched BEEEEP through all speakers at maximum volume.

Good idea! I have a small stack of network cards, but never tried anything else than Realtek cards in DOS. They "just work" but I have no idea how these compare to other cards. We could make a "benchmark" list or something with transfer speed and memory requirements of each card!
