From memory I could get dos sound working on my Dell branded BX-2 Midi definitely didn't work. Of course Dos games from within Windows was fine

Sounds like the PSU or board have gone out of spec, even if they look ok doesn't mean the voltages are correct. Like you I always installed OS to one drive and games to another, I've always found 2GB is plenty for Windows plus apps and still have space to spare, and I install alot less now then I did back when Win98 was my daily driver.
