What PC is it? the splash screen only shows briefly in the whole boot process so on a fast PC it'll barely show at all. Even my 5x86 the black screen seems to show longer then the splash screen. First thing to try is remove everything accept video and 1 stick of ram. System doesn't power on? try again replacing one of the 3 each time. (and CPU if you have a spare) If you still don't get anything you know its the CPU or M/B.

Yep, AWE and Win95 is perfect for this. It's fast enough for "launch titles" for Win95, Doom95, Return Fire, Diablo at a push but its more about the dos games and being in Win95 allows you use the awe at its full potential.
