Re: A couple of new builds.

Purple lighting to match the the purple text is pretty cool but does it change with the game? ;) Not much to say about the 486, nice list of parts in a good looking case. The jumper and mouse issues are all part of the fun with earlier PC's right? Can see the point of the "XP" build in a smaller …

Re: What about gaming and working in the same PC?

in Windows
If this is just a short term thing between contracts or while you are starting up then I don't see a problem. Main reason I wouldn't want to use my gaming PC is downtime. Work PC's are nice and stable, you install your software and apart from updates the config stays more or less the same month in …

Re: Is a Voodoo 2 worth the cost

The last 3dfx card no matter what it was would have always going to attract a premium as the company had a cult following, plus that's its the latest and fastest native glide card. I'm happy with the situation where collectors pay the premium and rest of us that just like messing around get probably …

Re: DTX 486 DX/33

Strange that they have used a 5.25 rather then the 3.5 bay for the FDD, Maybe they are like me and never liked mounting the drive sideways. Checking the CD-ROM model will confirm its interface. PAS16 is indeed a fun little card to play round with, High Treason did a video on it that convinced me …

Re: Will s478, s939, s775 or AM2 systems ever get as expensive as pre-socket 7 systems?

I'm 30 now, got into the hobby when I was 25 years old. As a child I had access to my father's 486 Toshiba laptop (Prince of Persia, LHX, Supaplex, Blockout) and a Pentium 2 machine (went to my grandparents every weekend to play some Starcraft, Diablo 2, Black & White and Baldur's Gate). However, …

Re: Will s478, s939, s775 or AM2 systems ever get as expensive as pre-socket 7 systems?

Nostalgia is the main driving force. I would assume the majority of us got back into reto machines in mid/late 30's? But our fondest memories are with the PC closer to our teens, lets round of to 10 years of age. That would place the next wave of people wanting to recreate their childhood PC from …

Re: Why are telephone cables still not shielded?

in Milliways
I don't know about the rest but I do know that Verizon does use shielded f1 and f2 cables. I was able to pick up a cheap Cisco adsl2+/vdsl2 option card for my Cisco 2600 router and that has a properly shielded rj11 Jack and I have the shield properly terminated at the nid and as well as the jack in …

Re: P III vs P4

PCIe is the successor to AGP and the changeover was during this period which resulted in AGP being standard on 478 PCIe being standard on 775 Crossover boards (so 478 with PCIe or 775 with AGP) do exist but weren't mainstream. IDE,SATA,PCI are common across both types. ISA isn't common for either.

Re: the war machine

The second 775 SLI build in less then a week! I'm liking this new trend :) https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=76338 Also like populating fan bays even if its more just to add character to the case then for the airflow Usually a theme, Red for the Hot P4, Purple PPro (triple P) My blue rig a …
