Which cards did you try? I'm surprised as the GF4 Ti4600 is concerned the "best" safe bet for BX motherboards. Not that I'm doubting you, it could be an early revision board or some strange Compaq thing.

Partition Magic or similar is probably the easiest Norton Ghost was another round that era. Good thing is Dos/Win9x is pretty simple/dumb. as long as io.sys rules are followed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IO.SYS then everything else doesn't really matter how its copped across/recovered

You shouldn't have to do anything? as long as the disk is formatted as a 6.22 bootdisk then all you would need to do is copy the autoexec.bat and config.sys files across to it.
