For somewhat of a parts build its ended up as a very nice PC indeed! I also agree late PC like this with the SC55, You'll almost never use the OPL chip AWE64 is definitely the right choice IMHO

For troubleshooting install the Win98SE and the RAID drivers. I've never booted off a RAID in Win98, let alone that specific controller so not sure if you need to specify the raid drivers during install or if the card nativity does this so setup just sees a single 40GB drive. See how that goes first …

I do have a problem with Plop, though. I can load it from a floppy just fine, but whenever I try to install it to the MBR (on either drive) the system hangs when trying to boot. I was able to uninstall it and return to the original MBR, but booting Plop from floppy every time I turn on the computer …

What if you set the drive as active? (PM will still take preference so wont affect booting) I dont think it will make a change but cant hurt to try? Seems really strange that Win98 can see it but dos cant?
