x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3 is indeed a P3 so your ok, The bios update will hopefully clear the microcode message for you but if not I wouldn't worry.

yes win98 lite is best of both worlds, but missing the OP's desire to restore back to original OS. Win95 is fine for lower spec PC's, not ideal, but fine.

I've never paid that much attention, but I'm sure swapping out drives will be fine. HDD's are usually backwards compatible so if it cant support 5400rpm for whatever reason it'll just drop back to 4200.

I did a fair bit of research on this few years ago and also went with a Mugen 2, always in the top 5 results and still somewhat easily found, Even got a spare off freecycle last December 😀 case size may be a problem though 🙁

Glide games will be the deciding factor. The GF4 is a better card all round excluding glide. Even then you have the option on nglide, which may out perform your original Voodoo 3 2000 Then it will come down if you prefur the real thing or using nglide to emulate the voodoo
