You may get away with playing the dos game from within windows if the PC has enough horsepower. I would think something like a P4 running Windows 98 and a PCI sound card with legacy support, say a SBLive - up to the Audigy's, Yamaha (being the most easy found cards)

Rekon your on the right track. Strip the PC back to basics. Video, Ram, HDD, that's it Boot into dos bypassing config.sys/autoexec.bat See if Doom runs now, and then slowly start building the PC up from that point.

I'd grab whatever drivers you want while you still can! Got an old Prolient few years ago and still had the drivers page, few months later...gone! and I do mean months Lucky I think everything is still on their ftp server, but takes ages to find anything
