If you are lucky it will work if you do a right-click on the installer and sets compatibility mode to Win95. You might have to create a short-cut and change the setting for that instead of the real installer. And you probably need to do the same for the game itself.

DOSBox don't install any drivers. All sound and graphics are sent to the operating system which has to magically figure out how to make it work.

Create BAT-files with your start-up commands, and tell DBGL to run the BAT-file. Then you won't need to preserve the autoexec-section.

I don't see it as insane. It all depends on how you value your own time. For me, with a somewhat skimpy knowledge of old hardware, paying someone else to put together a machine that works out of the box, will be more effective than me spending 3-4 weekends collecting and assembling the box.
