I have this CS9233-CQ based wavetable card, similar to your AOpen card above. The SB Pro voice is fantastic and the GM quite good too, I think. I've tried an ALS120 once and the hiss was incredible - dunno if the 100 has the same issue but I wouldn't be surprised if it did: Sound Blaster 16 Clones

Personally I think that any 486 faster than a 66MHz VLB machine is just a wanna be Pentium, so you might as well go Pentium! I find myself spending a lot more time messing around with my P166MMX than my slower PC's - SVGA at decent frame rates and the hardware is just that much easier to deal with. …

I'm assuming that the S23A with the onboard wavetable chipset cannot be modified to also support using a wavetable daughterboard... I'd go with the 200MMX personally, it's a much more useful system for DOS gaming because it can handle most SVGA games pretty well too, where the 100 will struggle. And you're already running into issues with speed sensitive games with the 100MHz so that's not really a factor I wouldn't have thought …

If I can get the SB16 to be quieter, I'll contemplate on making it my main card - though why does it seem so wrong to make the AWE64 only a MPU interface? :p Because it doesn't have a wavetable header and is UART only! My humble opinion only of course but the whole dual card setup is more trouble …

Very nice. I'll just add that the CT2290 has exactly the same fine qualities as the CT2230 in my experience, with the only difference being that the CT2290 is missing the socket for an ASP.
