RetroGamer4Ever is correct. The Yamaha MU50 and Roland SC-88 are probably the best options for maximum polyphony using a single module. I would like to have a setup like this. The challenge is finding an exact match for the existing SC-55, since there are so many different firmware revisions. Most sellers don't know how to display this information, and many units on auction don't even come with a power cable for them to test with.

I can understand the usefulness of this for a General MIDI device, but the CM-32L is based on the MT-32, which has a known polyphony. What is an examples are there where the composer wrote music for the MT-32 without taking this into consideration?

If you are running Windows 9x then you can find Yamaha software synthesisers that are free. In the next order of expense would be an Audigy or Audigy 2 with GS sound fonts. The last and most expensive would be an X2GS wavetable board, which should fit nicely on that card you have there.

I agree that building a Pentium Pro exclusively to run Quake would be pretty niche. It is a very interesting platform though to have in a connection. I would also agree that running NT on it would be ideal.

I thought that all of the CMI chips were horrible for DOS games. Or is just all of the PCI ones? This is a very interesting project. Can you explain more about it's origin and your choice of sound chip?
