In pure DOS I used the APPEND command for a similar purpose. (In that case, playing 3-disk Sierra games without swapping floppies, using one floppy in both 360k drives and one 360k RAM disk.) Did you try this? According to APPEND? that should work.

Perhaps there is some unofficial patch for 32-bit Windows 8 to use more than 4GB of RAM (in reality about 3.25GB), like the ones for Vista and Windows 7? Or just use 7 with the patch.

I used Zip disks to download stuff at university and carry it home (no broadband yet). Asides from the normal ATAPI Zip drives there are supposedly also IDE Zip drivers (early revision, they didn't produce those later on). The IDE ones won't need drivers, fully bootable just like hard disks. …

Is a 3dx better than a Matrox m3D in any way? The only difference I'm aware of is that the Matrox or generic PCX2 driver doesn't contain the game hints the Videologic driver installs.

Not earlier, just more of the early ones, as opposed to Direct3D games. (There are probably not a lot of early OpenGL games asides from Quake.)
