Dosbox does NOT emulate a MT32. There is an unofficial build that uses another project to emulate a mt32

Even if you owned Windows 95, downloading and using such an image is still illegal and frowned upon here. As for your idea of how it works, when you use that image in dosbox through imgmount and boit command, the image is the hd Windows 95 sees and uses. No extra virtual hd is created.

Were you looking in /library or in ~/library? ~/library is the correct one but since OSX 10.7 it is hidden. In finder click on the menu "go to" while holding the options key and library will be there to click. And of course the writecconf doesn't work. You have to pass a real path on your system and …

Well, it is open source and of course you can change it and distribute as you like (you only have to honor the gpl and make the source of your built available upon request). And keeping the splash, only in black, seems good enough IMO. But I'm not a dev 😉

In short I'd say a replacement instrument set for the Midi device. Can make midi music sound much better or in extreme cases worse 😉 for details use google or wikipedia... There is a soundfont recommendations thread on vogons

(Btw if you use SVN of Dosbox (see my signature) you can easily load a soundfont in Dosbox (via the preferences file - don't know the exact entry offhand though)
