Re: Voodoo 5 5500

Oh the irony... I'll actually buy that GF4 MX440 would be better for some old games that produce screen tearing on faster cards (I had that painful experience when upgrading from a really crappy 6500) but most of the time it should be either "retro" (Voodoo) or as modern as possible IMO. Btw …

Re: Monitor for an old PC - need advice

I use an Eizo L365, pretty good for an early LCD. Edit: Oh you mean from your choices? For DOS applications CRTs are optimal so if nothing is wrong with the Sony pick that... actually if all of those CRTs are cheap and work fine (test them before buying if possible) you can't go wrong with any of …

Re: Voodoo 5 5500

I got my first V5 myself and I can't understand your disappointment at all (I'm a bit disappointed myself, but that's another story :happyhappy:). Quick testing showed it's almost twice as fast as a higher clocked V3 in UT, what more can you ask for with performance? The only slightly annoying part …

Re: Place your bets :D

That old thermal grease is nasty, get some thermal grease remover from the hardware shop if they have it (it's basically citric acid I think). Otherwise yeah great case and I definitely remember those keys from back in the day 😀

Re: Old PC socket 7

elfuego wrote: No it wont, simply because it has no PCI slots. Well, at least according to your pics. Maybe there is a hidden PCI slot somewhere but I dont see it. I see three PCI slots on that second board, or are my senses playing tricks on me?

Re: They still make new 4:3 screens.

1280 x 1024 5ms It's 5:4, not 4:3. I don't think a lot of 1280x960 monitors exist (if any), only the really old 1024x768 or high-end 1600x1200s like the one I posted... Also some beastly 2048x1536 CRTs do exist :) My old laptop had a max resolution of 1280 x 960 and that was a 16:10 widescreen …

Re: PC Overhaul!

Might I suggest that you bump up the XP rig one or two generations ahead to an A64 or Phenom build? Or Intel equivalent if that suits you. With something like a Radeon X1950 or 8800GT it would be a powerhouse for XP era gaming. Or how about letting sanity prevail for once and just installing XP on …

Re: They still make new 4:3 screens.

I know that model is from 2006, but they still list it on their site, so maybe it's still being produced. From my experience, it's especially newer Trinitrons that deteriorate. I know of early to mid-90s non-FD models that still work fine after all these years. Unless the ghosting issue with mine (' …

Re: PC Overhaul!

It's clear that playing DX8 games on DX6 cards isn't going to suck only in theory. Perhaps there are numerous threads all over the internet with suggestions on how to get this game working on newer computers. If it's a DirectX backwards compatibility issue you can always dualboot to XP on your …

Re: PC Overhaul!

Even though I like to go for as much RAM as possible too, more than 512 MB is pretty useless for Win98 gaming. I think everyone here remembers how much RAM PCs had back then :) I have that amount in my machine (with the swap file disabled) and it never has ran out of memory so far and no tweaking is …

Re: They still make new 4:3 screens.

Pretty awesome. Does it still work fine without ghosting etc.? I have both a Sony TV and monitor that both smear bright colors on black unfortunately, while another old Philips TV ironically works just fine save for the broken SCART connector. But yeah with Trinitron you always have to live with the …
