Probably not much use in asking, but it would be interesting if someone with a similar setup could try what I've described in this thread. If it really were an error on the software side it'd certainly be the weirdest one I've come across so far. 😀

I know right. I used them myself for many years. An Asus screen, didn't even have the option to display 4:3 letterboxed...

I just installed that DOS version again. Yeah, that is quite astonishingly bad. The multiplayer community can go ahead and play that version, I certainly won't 😀

To each his own I guess 😀 If there is one thing that is really to be avoided it's the 1280x1024 screens. The fact that a lot of them were advertised as gaming monitors back then seems surreal nowadays. That plague even spread to CRTs where they recommended that res in the manual as optimal.

I have the Promedia 2.1 myself actually. It's incredible that they are still making them after over a decade, with only minor changes! I use them for my consoles. Good speakers, but to get a balanced sound I find that the subwoofer has to be set to almost minimum, otherwise the bass is way too …

Okay just to clarify: All games at all settings no matter what will work fine at all resolutions if run in D3D or OGL modes? Yup. But specific settings with specific resolutions will exhibit problems if run in Glide modes? Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex so far, but only in Glide/1600x1200/SLI/ …

Nope RacoonRider, Glide is indeed limited to 1024x768. With D3D the game is displayed fine even in 1920x1440.

In Uplink at least the skybox seems to use a different dithering pattern in each of the renderers. Also MiniGL crashes when the resolution is set to >1024x768. I didn't test replacement MiniGL versions.

Good call on looping some benchmarks, might do that. It's three games exhibiting the problem so far, all UE1 and Glide, so I'm not sure which of those factors are significant yet... need more Glide games I guess. I have Dethkarz actually but I doesn't allow anything above 1024x768. Probably caters …

I'd say shader usage became "a fad" in visual terms when most 7th console gen games stuck to the same techniques, those being overused low quality DoF blur, bloom and color desaturation when having to take cover due to the stupid regenerating health system or in the whole game altogether...

You are talking about the DOS version I guess? I didn't know for years that there even was one, when I tried it some time ago I found the sound quality to be inferior to the Windows version, among other things. So try that if you haven't already.

Think you got something mixed up here. Neither Halo nor UT04 are D3D9, they use D3D8, with UT04 having an experimental D3D9 renderer though.

What's the opinion on the smaller, "semi-pro" Roland/Edirol monitors here? The MA series in particular.
