Unless the battery leaked all over the board, I don't think a missing battery will cause a short-circuit in this case. It's possible one of those surface-mounted tantalum caps on the motherboard is shorted. A Polar Toneohm 950 would be helpful in finding out which cap is shorted, but if you have a …

Unlikely it's the same motherboard, this is an EISA bussed board. I am still trying to identify it myself. It doesn't seem to match any of the Micronics EISA 486 boards in TH '99 either. Closest I got was a Mylex, but it doesn't match any of those either.

For the rust I cannot scrape off with a wire brush or sandpaper, I use Evaporust, provided I can submerge said rusty part without worrying about damaging something by doing it. Yeah it's not a bad board. Not the fastest but it's pretty solid stuff, just got to be mindful of the caps Zida put too close to the CPU socket fan clips. I worked around those caps by replacing them with caps mounted on the backside of the board.

If it were my cards, between the two I'd pick the one with a good balance of speed and display quality, with higher emphasis on not having faint vertical lines on LCD monitors. Vertical lines drive me batty.
