Re: best windows 98 agp card

I always remove sticky adhesive and use thermal epoxy to affix them. Arctic Alumina was my preferred brand, but it has been discontinued. I guess I'll have to find something else now. I guess that explains why I didn't find it in stock at a decent price when I looked recently. Don't remember …

Re: Bumpgate? What Bumpgate?

I like XP64, but I know it didn't catch on so I definitely see the humor in using it for a "bad timing" mid 2000s build. I don't think the Athlon64 fits that description though. On that point, the one thing that would make this even more "bad timing" is if it used one of those late, high powered 64- …

Re: Bumpgate? What Bumpgate?

XP64 is perfect for an Athlon64, unless you want to do something that it has issues with, of course. I use XP64 as my primary OS, but on a secondary PC (which is an Athlon64, as it happens), I ran into some problems with support for some legacy stuff. XP64 is the breaking point for some such things. …

Re: Pentium II 400 Build

Seasonic SS-350BS is an ATX psu? it is safe to use for 440BX? I'm inferring a bit here, but I think you're asking about the Dell vs ATX issue for the SE 440BX series of motherboards. MetalMilitia's SE440BX-3 motherboard is a Dell version so it does have the Dell pinout. He's using an adapter that …

Re: Time wasters / "casual" games

The PC games I play are generally the type that require long sessions. But I will play short games on the NES or Genesis sometimes. Recently I've been playing Shadow of the Beast, which takes maybe 15mins or so before I die (haven't beaten it yet). I also sometimes like to play shooters which are a …

Re: Internet speed blues

in Milliways
I live in a rural area n California. Our cable internet download speed caps out at 200KB/sec. I suppose ISPs probably rate their throughput in raw terms (10 bits per byte), so I guess this is 2Mbps. I don't mind this as long as it works. The problem I have is that during peak hours the throughput …

Re: Help me fix a RIVA128 card.

Maybe that 2 in the circle indicates what type the cap is , problem is that with almost all smd passives you have no indication of the manufacturer... Again I am not implying you are wrong and I am correct - just discussing and presenting my thoughts on this since it's an interesting identification …

Re: Help me fix a RIVA128 card.

The STB you linked is a different board design than this model. Electrolytic caps have the electrolyte in a metal can, and their stripes are almost always on the negative side. An electrolytic might work fine though. If the OP has one handy (possibly on a junk board), that might be the easiest …

Re: Help me fix a RIVA128 card.

Just realized I have one of these cards. C22 is indeed the same as what you showed in the picture, it's a tantalum cap marked "10-16" (presumably 10uF 16V) along with a manufacturer logo and series. There are different standard physical sizes for these things. Try to get a careful measurement of the …

Re: Help me fix a RIVA128 card.

C21 in the photo looks like a tantalum capacitor - tantalums have the positive side marked with a stripe like that one does. The "10-16" might mean 10uF 16V, but that's just an assumption. You can use a higher voltage rating but generally you should try to keep the capacitance value the same.
