Sure, definitely check the voltage output - I don't think so, but maybe, there's a slight chance that card was weirdly advanced and messed around with voltage control for the fan via a temperature sensor. tl,dr - it's a matter of software, the data rate is moderate. 1 x means 150 kBps. I'm rather sure that on older systems, a scsi setup would help.
