That is pretty cool - I wonder if 'ol Bill wrote any code in those versions. If MS was anything like the place I work at currently, then 90% of it would be cut-and-pasted code from V1.0. I also wonder why 6.2 wouldn't be open sourced yet - is someone still making a buck off something that old? …

I'll always prefer vanilla DOSBox to third-party builds. The official version may not be updated very often, but at least it's the most stable.

Your best bet is probably to put an actual DOS installation on VirtualBox. You could also try FreeDOS, although I can't guarantee that will do what you want.

Have you tried running the game under Windows 98/ME compatibility mode? I had a similar problem with another game (Field & Stream Trophy Bass 4 version 1.0.0.4) on my Windows XP laptop a few months ago, and enabling compatibility mode solved the problem.

I installed DirectX 9 from the Microsoft website, but the DragonHeart installer is still giving me the same error. It looks like it's programmed to run its built-in DirectX installer regardless of whether DirectX is already on the computer.
