I've had issues with cheap CF-IDE adapters on various systems, but never with the fairly expensive Startech adapter. Check/replace cables and try to test the adapter in a newer system to see if it behaves differently.

The secondary power connected is not needed for booting the bare board. Without ram the board will not boot though...

Don't give up, that's a realky nice board you have there! Change the battery, reseat the memory or tymry other sticks. Reseat the CPU or CPUs, test with an older PII400 e.g. There's still a lot you can test before giving up on such a nice board.

A slot 1 system is usually the easiest way to have a good and stable retro system. It's still rather common, cpu's in the lower specs are easy to source and you have full DOS capabilities. For your needs an ATX 66MHz FSB intel LX-based system will give tons of joy.

So I went to a town about 60 miles away [...] I do sympathize... it's bad enough you drive all that way (which would have me end up in another country) to find all's been cleaned out by scrappers. Good point on the PSU, I suppose it's far from reliable. With another PSU, the power does not trip. The system does not boot, though. Depending on which ISA slot I use, the output of the test card is either I've only been able to quickly test the graphics card on an ASUS ISA-486, and that is ok. …

I test and/or run Win2K by default on dual cpu systems, about all my Duals have been tested at one time or another on Win2K (S5-S7-S8-Sl1-Sl2-S370). On my Pr440FX it's quite snappy, probably the 2 PPro overdrives and 1GB ram helps 😀.
