I have a 30gb Maxtor drive that looks just like yours that pops up as a bunch of question marks and exclamation points when it tries to identify it.

I saw a link around here somewhere where they found that in a good case you can run the AM1 cpu without a HSF. Setup linux or something on your Dell and try to sell it for a loss to recoup some of your money to put towards an ideal custom HTPC build. The Optiplex just looks like an unfeasible …

I bought a 530 cpu for $3 with shipping not to long ago, one of the 3.2-3.4ghz chips would be a good cheap upgrade. OH just had the thought, the switch from the platter 80gb drive to a SSD would decrease your power consumption a bit and would give you a little wiggle room to add a fan or two 😀

It is to bad that it does not appear to support Cedar Mill p4 chips. They are a great option for low power consumption. If you are dead set on keeping this project going I think you can buy 300watt replacment powersupplies for this form factor. I am not 100% sure but it is worth looking into 😀

For the ram capacity it may be a matter of adding further memory support in a later bios revision. Since your motherboard is a later revision you have that going for you, as often compatibility and stability are increased with later revisions of any motherboard. The main problem with the SFF design here is that the CPU runs way to hot and consumes far to much power for the thermal design of the case. If you have access to the tools (like a dremel)I would advise hacking up the case and adding fans to increase air flow. Again that would increase the power …

Already downloaded Standalone SP2 and SP3. Did not fix it, so the new updater is not included with either SP. In any case had a HDD with XP for this pc sitting forgotten on the shelf so it is all good. I would be wary of installing a fresh install of XP if you need all of the updates however.

I have got a system running a Pentium D 945 and love that cpu. It games nicely and is more than enough horsepower for the average user. Plus it does not get hotter than like 45C with my $20 HSF 😁

If you decide to keep it an XP machine I suggest at least a 3.0ghz Northwood p4 with Hyper Threading ( I just bought a 3.2 for $8, they are cheap) swap in 2gb of DDR400 and ditch the onboard crapics for ANY agp card past 2002 or so.
