Re: AWE64 Gold - A Lost Cause?

I will have to try to clean the ISA slots. I've cleaned the card contacts with Akasa TIM-Clean, and I've done the pencil eraser trick before. The power supply is an AOpen AO350-12AHNF 350W. Not sure exactly when it's from, as I got it from my boyfriend. He'd had it sitting around for years. Best …

Re: AWE64 Gold - A Lost Cause?

Tried both ISA slots. It is having the same issue in either slot as far as I have noticed. I also can't see any visible signs of damage on the card. Caps look alright as far as I can tell without studying them with a magnifying glass. The thing I find most weird, is that the SIMMCONN seems to …

Re: Good PCI sound card for music

The ESI/AudioTrak Prodigy 7.1 HiFi has excellent audio quality. I think it's not such a well known card, seeing as ESI are mostly aiming their products towards the professional market segment. It has socketed opamps for easy upgrade/tweaking, and uses the VIA Envy24HT chip. Unlike the Xonar cards …

AWE64 Gold - A Lost Cause?

Right. Dramatic headline, but here goes: I have a Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold in my K6-3 system. It sounds just fine for wave playback, so no issues there. The problem is that half the time I boot the system, I get an error message about not being able to load sound font bank. I check the sound font …

Re: Sound cards for 486DX4-100 system?

I use SB16 with DreamBlaster S1 + GUS in my DX4. Ideally, I'd love an MT-32 and SC-55/88 as well, but they have started becoming a bit too pricey for me at the moment. The GUS is of course awesome for those games that have native support, and the SB16 is one of those "works with everything" type of …

Re: Help understanding soundcards and quality

I keep seeing Aztech cards of the same appearance being called different names all over the web, so honestly, I feel very unsure which model is which and I somehow doubt that anyone who doesn't have a boxed model actually knows for sure. But sure, it may well be called "Pro 16", I personally have no …

Re: Help understanding soundcards and quality

That Aztech card looks a lot like the Aztech Sound Galaxy "Something Something-else" (Washington 16 perhaps? Can't remember) that I had back in the days. It was a somewhat weird card. In most games it would work as a SB Pro, in a few it would work as SB 16, although apparently hardly any "SB Clone" …

Re: CF-IDE not working

AP53... Your link says Acer, but I have a board that looks exactly the same, an AOpen AP53. A surprisingly nice little Pentium board imho. I've only ever tried it with 4GB CF cards, but that worked fine for me. The user manual doesn't list any drive size limits, only that it supports "more than 528- …

Re: Matrox G400/G450 Quake III Performance

Interesting. If I can find the energy, I'd like to do some tests with the TurboGL drivers soon. I got my G400 MAX in a K6-3 550MHz at the moment, and I haven't really benchmarked it recently. I remember doing some tests a few years ago, comparing how it performed in different setups, going from K6-2 …

Re: 2006 dream machine!

I feel tempted to point out that I am one of the few people I know of who never hated Vista. When I first got it, was in 2007, on my brand new Dell XPS M1730. To me, it always felt like an overall improvement over XP. It was stable, quick, looked awesome and just felt much more modern than XP. Sure, …

Re: 2006 dream machine!

Yes, I'd agree that the 7600GT is holding it back. Back when I had a single core Athlon 64 3700+, and it ran fine with a 7800GT "Superclocked" from EVGA, so with a Q6600, you certainly have enough cpu horsepower for much more powerful graphics.
