My opinion on socket 8 for gaming. It was awesome for GLQuake because PPRO is much faster at 32-bit for which it was designed (running NT and such). It is however slower at 16-bit. It can be cool but I wouldn't use it for DOS.

Is that PDIP8 Atmel chip an EEPROM? If so, maybe the 8-bit to 3-bit and 8-bit to 2-bit ADPCM is a software issue that is correctable? EDIT: I will look at what revision I have today.

I can confirm with 100% certainty that it will contain an AMD K6-III+ 450ACZ CPU. It's a 2.0 Volt Core CPU.

Sadly looking at the YMF724 datasheet the SBPro block has registers for the filters but they do not operate. I think I interpreted the data correctly. Oh well I'm off topic.... what else is new?

Ok im not spilling the beans yet but 386sx mentioned the MS5169 which I have. Mine is a revision 2.1 that supposedly doesn't support K6-2/3+ CPU's. The revisions 3.0 and 4.0 do with BIOS 3.5 which again supposedly you cannot flash to a revision 2.1 board. So I fire it up, boot from floppy, startup …

OK Duke 3D 1.4 Atomic under sound test with real CT1600 and SBPro 2.0 selected in setup and reverse not checked the sound test plays left and right correctly

Seems I can only find shareware version of Duke and it doesn't have sound check. I'll have to dig up my Duke CD....

I dug up another ES1688 card that differs from the one I have and I will play with it too. I have a few ideas for mods that I would like to try out. I wonder if the noise is the ES1688 chip or its implementation / lack of filtering.

Nice So far i have had a chance for Dune 2, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D. I was happy with all and the door sounds in Wolfenstein 3D work correctly.
