I replaced the processor on my P2 motherboard and can boot properly now. However, on my CMI8738 model 33, I was unable to write to PCI config register 0x40 using PT.EXE from PeriTool. The tool says it wrote 0x01 but if I read it again, it shows 0x00.

I have a CMI8738 model 33 and also a model 55. Unfortunately, my Pentium 2 computer won't POST and I already swapped video card and PSU, so I won't be able to test until I swap out the motherboard. I do have a 440 BX motherboard which I will try to install this weekend.

Kodi, are you able to hear FM music in MS-DOS with your CMI8738? If I remember correctly, after a certain revision, the FM block was removed. I think your best bet is to find a CMI8738 card that does not have the SX/LX label on the chip. To modify the soundcard registers, search Vogons for PeriTool. …

Not much. I was mistaken that the music was general midi, exported to wav, and encoded with Dolby Surround Sound. Now we know the production was a big step-up from WCII.

Well, a program like MPQ Editor can extract the low quality wav file music from Starcraft. The official Starcraft soundtrack is also available in the iTunes store, in high quality. Use a Sound Blaster AWE32's digital output since it is at 44.1 khz. Try to get one with a genuine Yamaha or Creative OPL3, not the CQM variants. EDIT: oops forgot AWE32/SB32 are ISA 🤣.
