Re: The Quest for Pixel Perfect DOS Emulation

Not sure if I'm going more or less off topic, but what's your source that 640x400 is 70.100hz? Having an LCD panel I couldn't care less about the modelines, but refresh rates I do have to get right. I would say that is almost uniquely on topic. I got it from here: http://tinyvga.com/vga-timing/ …

The goal of this project is to make DOS on a modern PC look as close to identical as possible as a real DOS machine. This means identical resolution, identical refresh rate, and no software scaling. Just to be clear, when using a any modern LCD with square pixels , displaying VGA mode 13h 320x200 …

Re: what will you do when your last hardware fails?

Sad thing is that the Model M is just a clicky membrane keyboard. Yes, I have a few of them but real mechanical switches are even better. The sound/feel of a buckling spring/membrane combo works for me, what can I say ? I also have 2 keyboards equipped with Outemu Blue switches . I prefer the model …

I don't care for CRTs for anything VGA and higher (15KHz stuff is another matter, potentially), but people will need to pry my model M keyboards from my cold, dead, rigor-mortised hands . And you bet they will! Mint condition Model M keyboard -> Only been with corpse for 3 months -> $500 plz! LOL …

Well in that case, what exactly does "support" even mean? In all likelyhood : "Supported" means we (Nvidia) have tested it, expect it to work and can help you if you need assistance with it (probably not for free). "Unsupported" means we (Nvidia) have not explicitly tested it, do not guarantee it …

Re: Can one connect an IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM to one of those USB to IDE adapters? Has anyone tried that ?

That is one of the reasons I bought a Vantec branded unit rather than a no-name special of the week . They come with vantec units: https://www.legitreviews.com/vantec-sata-ide-to-usb-3-adapter-review_131412 Do you mean to say that you have had issues with the power brick provided with a Vantec …

Settings is their remodel of Control Panel. Their 8 year remodelling project that it looks like they're not intending to finish with Windows 11. I may be wrong, but I don't think they can actually finish the job for now, if that means eliminating the Control Panel completely . AFAICR, there are …

Re: Can one connect an IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM to one of those USB to IDE adapters? Has anyone tried that ?

I've a few of these which work OK on most optical drives - even works without the brick with a laptop drive for full HD recordings from my TV usb2ide.jpg Be warned that those power bricks (specifically the type in that picture, I've had a few of them) have a tendency to go bad, causing the drives …

EDIT: and apparently, the graphics card itself must also explicitly support passthrough: https://wccftech.com/nvidia-enables-gpu-passthrough-on-geforce-graphics-cards-added-functionality-virtual-machines/ That is not what I understand from the article . GPU passthrough on NVIDIA GeForce graphics …

Virtualbox 6.1 broke 3D acceleration on WinXP and earlier, but it should work fine if you use Virtualbox 6.0 Are you suggesting that 3D acceleration was working in guest operating systems older than XP or 2K? That is news. Do Win98 guest systems suffer a different set of problems related to 3D …

Re: I wish I had discovered Windows ME sooner!

Pro tip: don't run DOS games in a Windows environment unless it's Win3.1 or earlier. For a pro tip, it's a pretty bad one. For starts, Win9x can actually run many DOS games that simply crash in Win3.x. Games that use DOS extenders come to mind. And some sound cards support better features for DOS …
