Re: How do I learn old server stuff?

in PC Emulation
I am 99% sure that this is the wrong thread for this, but it's been something bothering me for a while. I have an array of software and books (mostly from the 90s) that go into detail about databases and server setup. However, it seems most of them were instructions for setup with the reader …

Re: ESS Audiodrive ES1868F and MIDI

A151-A00 YAMAHA YMF719E-S Great choice . OPL3 , SB Pro, WSS . I recommend using Tiido's SETYMF (which I use) or trying JazeFox's UNISOUND (which I have not tried yet) to configure the card. Yamaha's SETUPSA is not great, IMHO, and currently doesn't even work in my multi-card setup . Thanks for the …

Re: ISA video cards in DOS - where is the cap?

Take the AVGA01/CL-GD5401 for example That's literally the only 256kb card which has good performance. Then again, performance may vary due to build quality and AVGA01 may not even boot on particular system anyway. I remember reading about a particular VGA chip (can't remember which), not yet …

Re: Roland MPU IPC / MPU-401 issues

It has an ALI chipset. The usb card does work in windows 98 Which is handy for transferring files. Glad to have it working, I just restored my MT-32 with 23 brand new nichicon capacitors ! (Pic below) https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/nrprdrpt.com/images/237F8D45-EBE9-490C-BAA8-3982DD82C5D6.jpeg …

Re: ISA video cards in DOS - where is the cap?

Basically their is no real difference if you just play dos games even 256kb is enough for gaming Not really. Early and/or budget VGA cards suck so much, that it's not good idea to use them even on 386. Agreed. Early OAK (OTI-037 , I think) cards and anything with a Realtek VGA chip suck especially …

Re: Resurrecting an old IBM Valuepoint 486 machine. How can I get it to contribute to World Community Grid?

So far it seems to be working. The input voltage is pretty low, I think the PSU is on it's way out (+4.36V on the +5V rail and +10.94V on the +12V rail). That's probably why the processor didn't blow up without the VRM. Luckily this generic VRM is adjustable. Computer posted with the VRM installed. …

Re: Roland MPU IPC / MPU-401 issues

Ok, so I reserved IRQ9 and saw that it assigned the USB PCI card to other interrupts 10/11 I think. But I still had the same problem. I removed the USB PCI Card and it instantly fixed the problem with the MPU-401 :) not sure why removing the card fixed the problem though. Thanks for your help I …

Re: Roland MPU IPC / MPU-401 issues

I have a Roland MT-32 that works flawlessly and sounds great using softMPU. When I use the MPU IPC controller card I noticed that the music sounds terrible and it seems like instruments 1 and 2 are never used. I tried changing the cables and removing my ESS audio drive card to see if it was a …

Re: ESS Audiodrive ES1868F and MIDI

Both the ESS and Yamaha are SB Pro compatible . I would set one to A220 I7 D1 T4 and the other to A240 I5 D0 T4 . My preference would be to set the Yamaha to A220 etc . because of its OPL3 and some older games not suporting anything else than A220 . You can use 2 small batch files to set blaster …

Re: ESS Audiodrive ES1868F and MIDI

Had my eye on an OPL3 based Addonics/Labway card for a while and just picked one up for £16 delivered. Feels very odd working with ISA slots again after all these years. I cut my teeth (and knuckles) building 386 and 486 machines back in the day. I've forgotten so much DOS magic... Is the card …

Re: ESS Audiodrive ES1868F and MIDI

I run three sound cards. If resources do not conflict, there are no issues . A gameport card is another option, but I would go with another sound card . Is that a Quad amp under the headphones ? Had my eye on an OPL3 based Addonics/Labway card for a while and just picked one up for £16 delivered. …

Re: Voodoo 1 vs. Voodoo 2 on a 486

I have tried but couldn't get the GF2 drivers working with a Cyrix 5x86; worked with an Am5x86 though. Did the GF2 work for 3D in OpenGL and/or DirectX on that AM5X86 ? I would have expected the 3D acceleration handling part of the driver to have been designed to take advantage of (and likely …

Re: 4 Sound Card DOS System

The wayI would approach the multi sound card question is to start by deciding what you actually want from the setup in terms of actual features . You may find that you do not actually need 4 sound cards at once (having an actual SB Pro or a second compatible is rather pointless if you already have …
