Most games with SB16 support that I've tampered with have audio files in 8-Bit formats... It's probably easier to do it that way than having the system scale them down to 8-Bit in realtime if you only had an 8-Bit card, especially given that there was a strong chance you'd be on a weaker system.

With a 9600XT you could probably just run a wrapper and get better performance across the board whilst leaving an extra slot free. Either way, the 9600 is probably the best choice.

I suspect this would work; http://www.nongnu.org/free-defrag/ Says it's for FreeDOS (Which I've never really played with. Viable alternative? Might have to test that.) but so does a load of other software, including several that I have run under DOS 6/7 without issue.

I had this with a P2 and a P3... I think the Athlon does something similar. I suspected it to be a problem with the GeForce driver and do not know a work-around. On rare occasions, pressing Esc when the system froze worked but I never figured out exactly what was going on.

Daisy-chaining is generally a no-no. You could probably get or easily make a MIDI splitter. As for getting the audio back into your card, that's a little harder as you'd need to fabricate a mixer or a switchbox of some kind...
