I converted the Hocus Pocus clip to 1728x1080 (no change in frame rate), resulting in a ~70 MB video. I've seen a few people playing there every now and then but most of the time there's no-one there. Old DOS multiplayer games just aren't that popular anymore. And people use source ports to play them (Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D are still quite popular).

Sounds like the game is using PC speaker not MIDI. Run the game's setup program to configure it to use MIDI.

I noticed another sound related issue under Ubuntu. I installed TiMidity++ and tried some games with MIDI music. Sometimes the music gets "corrupted" (lots of crackling, almost like static noice but you can still hear the melody). Guess I'll have to use Windows to play DOS games...

I actually have a similar problem with a few Finnish games. They use the Scandinavian characters in the filenames of the game's data so renaming doesn't help.
