After an aborted attempt of building a socket 7 K6 III+ system (CPU correctly detected but the system keep rebooting instead of booting the OS) I've decided to try VIA C3 as it looks like it gives me even more flexibility. I've found a suitable mobo with 3 ISA slots and I have a few CPUs on the way …

Lovely machine! Interesting that you're going for a dual partition / OS Setup. MS-DOS 7.1 works pretty well, but you will get a bit more memory with MS-DOS 6.22.

Hey, they choice of motherboard shouldn't matter. HT you want to disable in the BIOS, but apart from that it should work well. Are you looking into playing DOS games at higher resolutions?

Ok this starting to make sense now. To summarise, if a polymer replacement has significantly lower ESR, then I get away with using a lower uF. Voltage has to match though.

What is the reason for Panasonic caps not being recommended for VRM on P4 / Athlon 64? They don't make low ESR capacitors? I have two AOpen P4 boards with Japanse capacitors. Interestingly they have a mix of brands. One has Panasonic and Rubycon, the other one Panasonic and KZE or something similar …

Well Tomshardware used a Intel Pentium III 866 when they reviewed the card, so they have a point. But that wouldn't make me not use that card. At very high resolutions it's great to have extra power.

I got my first sound card, a Sound Blaster 1.5, after saving up for it during a summer holiday job. At that time, Monkey Island 2 impressed me the most. Not that much later I got a General MIDI board, so I didn't experience FM much / at all any more.
