For better compatibility with a few DOS games, clock speed can matter. Some games have issues at high clock speeds, even with cache disabled. My main DOS PC is basically a Pentium 100 MHz (200 MHz model clocked lower) for maximum compatibility.

At work recently I "recycled" a ton of old Core 2 duo machines. I tested them all, I think out of 100 machines, maybe 1 or 2 were faulty. Motherboards were Intel boards.

Got two more P4 boards with the 651 chipset. Both AOpen. Caps look mint, one board has Panasonic and Rubicon, the other one Panasonic and KZE. Both turn on and POST with a V3 and Diamond TNT. One board is missing the chipset cooler, will have to find a solution for that, there are no mounting holes, …

you have to add some reset between the songs. I think the lower volume improves set VST quality, hard to say though. Maybe record one pass with volume 40 vs full volume set after reset. None of them were recorded from the game though. I recall when doing mt32 recordings, I had to use dosbox to …

I'll have to check out the Audigy 2 under Windows 98 one day. How do you go about switching the driver to VXD? Is there an entry in the start menu, or a tool in the program folder?

Yeah, dito. The BIOS reporting the size correctly doesn't necessarily mean it's supported. Exactly. Happened to me once with an 386. It was detecting all the parameters correctly, but wouldn't allow me to use it. If there is no LBA support in the BIOS, forget about using anything bigger than 528MB …

The work being done on Pi and other mini computers is terrific, but I'm wondering if anyone has the skill, time and passion to write a front-end or something like that for Windows to use on a standard notebook with MIDI interface?

A X-Fi Titanium PCIe would have fit nicely into the PCIe 1x slots. AMD had this cool & quiet technology, but you need to install the driver, enable it in the BIOS and set the power management. For more performance the FX range is worth a look, not cheap, but very fast!

The AWE64 Gold works with the built-in Windows drivers. Note that you will need to use the RCA ports, not the headphone jacks. Testing under pure DOS it what I would be doing next.

Yea there are two versions of 3dbench for a reason 😀 Version 1.0 is recommended for slow machines. 286, 386 and will work reliably. But it doesn't work precisely with faster machines, having huge steps. Here 1.0c is what you should use.

I've done charts like this many years ago :D The motherboard, memory timings and graphics card also matters a little. CPU architecture matters the most though. Using an ISA card is a trick to make it even slower. What a nice graph will show are the "gaps", areas that you cannot reach with the cache …
