Very nice! That's one fast AGP card for sure 😀 I have the X1950 Pro, but keeping my eyes out for the 3850 as well.

AFAIK a 32 bit application (like a game) can only use / reserve up to 2 GB. Seeing that all the games are 32 bit games, RAM is really not an issue 😀 3 GB available RAM is all you need.

Oh absolutely. AM3+, FM2, socket 1156 all run XP. There are really so many options, spoiled for choice 😀 I see no need for 64 bit XP. I usually go with 4 GB of memory. For XP just standard XP SP3 will do the job.

I very much prefer using a V3. For me V2 and V2 SLI is indeed all about nostalgic and coolness 😀 I think Windows games should all run just as well on the V3. But some DOS games can have issues on the V3, but also on the V2 and run better on the V1. 🤣

I've used standard IDE optical drives on 386DX and SX computers. I always use the same controller card, an ISA GoldStar Prime 2. This AGP card arrived recently, but only got around to giving it a proper run today. Played Far Cry and Need for Speed Most Wanted at 1600 x 1200 and it does well. It's the HIS X1950 PRO IceQ 3 Turbo 512MB.

Over here in Australia, the recyclers are already selling Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 workstations from Dell and HP. Some even come with SSD. They costs A$ 300 to 400 and are not far off the latest and greatest.

Crikey, 2011, that's Sandy Bridge stuff. A Core i5 2400 with 4 GB and a SSD will still give you an amazing Internet / Office / Media experience. I would also be interested in hearing about some Athlon XP builds as an alternative to the P4 line. Also, is there anything to worry about if you find a P4 board with PCIe? I believe with Intel 915 chipset is the last one to support 98. I'm not sure about Athlon 64, but I think they are supported …

I think the issue might be with Tie Fighter here. It causes hanging notes in DOSBox and VirtualMIDISynth. But this is just something others have mentioned to me, but worth considering. IMO the 865 chipset is so good, and so readily available that I don't see the need to get anything else unless you require 3.3 V AGP compatibility.
