Yea SIS chipset stuff is on my radar now :) Finding documentation on some boards can be a bit tricky, sometimes there is no clear indicator about 3.3V compatibility. I've got an Asus P4S533-VM with SIS 651 and universal AGP. I really like it, great for benchmarking AGP cards under Windows 98 or XP. Initially I had a P4 3.06 in it, it worked great, but someone let me know that the CPU has HT and isn't supported. So I'm using a 2.8 GHz P4 now 😀

Remove the live and see if the onboard MIDI works. Disable onboard MIDI in BIOS and see if the live works?

I only have a few SIS boards, but they all work great and are stable and also quite fast. I don't hear / see / read much of retro builds with SIS chipset. It's mostly Intel, VIA, ALI, Nvidia... I haven't done much DOS testing, for me it worked though, including using a wavetable board. I tried a few newer games like Descent and Doom and they worked fine. In general I stick with ISA for DOS machines. OP indicated he is not after DOS, so this is maybe for another thread?

Vortex 2 also gets my vote. I've used it in many machines and it always has worked great. A lot of cool Windows 9x games use A3D and sound amazing. DOS compatibility is decent, even has a working wavetable header which is cool.

Interesting, didn't know about this issue. I do happen to use SATA optical drives whenever I can and diligently disable on-board devices that are not needed.

There are SO many alternatives to the 8800 GTX. 8800 GT, 9800 GT, 9600 GT, 9800 GTX, 9800 GTS... I really like the 8800 GT, it's single slot and packs quite a punch. The 9600 GT is surprisingly fast too. And the HD4850, great little single slot card.

I remember Far Cry getting a bit of a boost on GF6 cards with the SM3 patch. But looking at old reviews you often see ATI dominating HL2 and Far Cry, whereas Nvidia dominated in Doom 3 and other OpenGL games.
