Socket 7 would work great as you can slow it down to 386 / 486 speeds by playing with the cache settings. A proper 486, and also 386 (but this one will limit your options) are also worth checking out. But Socket 7 is by fat the most flexible approach 😀

Very nice stuff. Sometimes I have this dream of getting rid of everything, simplifying things, one retro PC, a Roland MT-32 and playing Monkey Island rather than building PCs. Such a machine would be perfect for this 😁

I wonder if the GeForce 2 Ti were binned Ultra cards because they have the same core clock speeds as the GeForce 2 Ultra but the memory clock was 30/60Mhz (DDR) slower than the GeForce 2 Ultra. I can't agree with that. A 9250 does 100 FPS in Quake III at 1280 x 1024 with a decent CPU. Regarding price and availability, that depends on where you live, but at least from my end, the 9200 cards are very easy to find and cheap, whereas 8500 cards are getting rarer and cost a premium. Anything …

For something that is easy to find and cheap, something from the 9000 series. 9200 or 9250 or something like that. Avoid any SE or LE versions though 😀

I did some tests in that regard, but with a Super Socket 7 machine. The ISA cards surprised me, they were not slower, sometimes even the fastest cards. They did not however offer 3D Audio, EAX, A3D and all of that.

Of course! The card should work with any game supporting the Adlib and very first Sound Blaster. Your issues likely are somewhere else. Especially if you're using newer hardware with these old games, and / or running Windows 9x.

Check out the ESS AudioDrive, even the later ones. The PnP card I have, in a non PnP machine it lets you use command parameters instead 😀

I tried DOSBox on Bay Trail and Cherry Trail Atom, and the performance is indeed limited. Older 386 and 486 type games work well, but more demanding 3D games not at all. The latest Atom incarnation is the Apollo Lake, but by the looks of it not much has changed.
