Remove the battery and use the clear CMOS jumper. Isn't the V3 known to draw more power than other cards? Maybe something to do with this? Although the issue seems to lie with the video, do try different RAM. You never know 😀

Whenever I tried an ATI card, I had issues. So I just stick with Nvidia. Doesn't help you, I know...

Coming along nicely 😀 One comment regarding V2 SLI vs V3. V3 has a much better image quality. So does the Matrox of course. That alone would be a huge factor for me.

My tip is to keep your eye out for OEM boards. I have two from Acer that are fully Tualatin compatible with the Intel 815 chipset. The challenge is finding out which board is actually compatible.

That's very useful, thanks for sharing this solution. I never tried the Vortex 2 in a pure DOS environment. But with a wavetable board, this card is actually quite decent.

This was under DOS. Personally, I'd just go with a CF card, regardless of the computer being a 286, 386 or 486.

The "best" fans I found are the ones that have rubber anti-vibration mounts. Arctic cooling does fans like that, others have rubber thingies that are used instead of the screws. It reduced the vibration going from the fan to the case. Makes the biggest difference IMO. http://www.arctic.ac/worldwide_ …

Then just stick with two 1 GB sticks. Should be plenty for most games. Remember that late Windows XP games, often already had DX10 features and are best played on Vista+. 2006 / 2007 seems to be that point.

There are lots of options :) Very popular are CF cards in 386 and 486 computers for pure DOS. For faster machines, or machines that use Windows 98, I do use modern drives. It might seem wasteful, but new hard drives are quite cheap, or you might already have one lying around. I use SATA to IDE …

At that resolution, you shouldn't see much of a difference. Try your benchmarks again at 512 x 384.

Never heard of this. What games freeze? One of the linked threads mentioned Tie Fighter. What other games are affected. I agree, just use another card as the main MPU401 interface. Configure the Creative card's MPU401 at 300, and the other card on 330. Make sure no other resources clash.
