IMO there must have been something else going on because I haven't experiences Wing Commander joystick issues with MS-DOS Mode and I test all sorts of hardware 😀 But it's working for you now, so that's a great outcome.

My take was always that AMD stopped at 570 for a reason 😁 I only got 600 with huge amounts of voltage, whereas 550 works much easier. So my tip is to just stick with 550 and be happy.

The Matrox will have the best image quality, but it's DOS compatibility isn't as good. Still, I would start with this card and try out your games, chances are you won't run into any issues 😀

Under Windows we're covered with virtual drive software, but AFAIK there is nothing for DOS beyond mounting ISO only discs with certain drives from FreeDOS project.

2001 is mostly a CPU benchmark, don't use it to compare GPUs in different systems. 03 would be more reliable. And yes, memory interface is often the issue. There are so many gimped cards out there, versions that aren't on any wikis, it's quite amazing really.

The only 15 pin joystick I have is the MS Sidewinder 3D. Was given to me by a friend, it works well. Under Windows 98, you can go super modern thanks to USB support. I am using a Thrustmaster T.160000, it's a real beauty.

You can mod a CD Audio cable or use individual wires, like the ones that are used with breadboards / electronics projects.
