^^ Good point. I like to avoid sweeping statements, there are a lot of factors to consider and everyone has different needs. I have seen all sorts of driver issues under XP, so for many having the option to use old drivers is important.

Not really... the phemom II line is faster then the Core 2 line, especially in games. Really it's a wash, they are both great processors to have. I'd be surprised if there is much of a difference between a Wolfdale and a Phenom II X2. AM3+ for retro gaming I'm well aware, been mentioning it for a …

Yea, I believe they are unlocked downwards, the Black Edition are also unlocked upwards.

The other Phenom CPU to look out for is the Phenom X4 965BE, Quad core 3.4ghz with unlocked multipliers I believe at stock speeds it was a better gaming CPU than the X6 1090T. Great CPU, good to see people being interested in Phenom II. It's interesting, for some reason the high end Core 2 Quad …

I started playing around with a few ES1868 cards. I have three in total. There is lots of good stuff to talk about. It's very quiet, the drivers are small and easy to use, especially if you like command line tools. FM music sounds very nice. Only negative I found is that on all 3 cards the wavetable …

There are so many XP era games, a ton of them will run great on a GeForce 4 or Radeon 9700. You just go back a few years. Also, there is one massive reason to use a GF4: Splinter Cell 😊

A quick look at a prototype of the X2. Anything is subject to change, so keep that in mind. I've also done two quick recordings of Doom and Descent Setup. It always takes more time than planned :blush: This hobby is a black hole when it comes to time. It just goes away. The Voodoo 5 does have cult status, but performance is often overrated. At last I got around to trying this ESS card. I used the drivers from VOGONS driver archive. They are very compact, fit on a floppy and are quite simple. No GUI though, it's all command line switches. Quickly tried a few games, and tested the wavetable, all working great. Descent also picks up the …

Haven't updated this project in a long time... So GOG added a bonus content to their Wing Commander 4 release. It now includes the DOS version! Had to try it out. The DOSBox config mounts the game folder as C and a subfolder CD1 as optical drive. All you need to do is copy the contents of CD1 onto a …
