Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

I think that the Covox, similar to the GUS, was mostly a darling of the demoscene. In the early 90s, SB cards were very expensive, especially for young talented computer artists who were still in high school. So a cheap Covox (or even better, making your own for just a few bucks) was a good way to …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

I've listened to my CVX-2 again, and I also have a very clean sound, not the noise in the second part. I am currently running it on my 286-20, so I can't really get more than 30 kHz out of it, but it sounds really good. I'll see if I can make a recording of this tomorrow. Then I'll also dig out my …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

For some reason the CVX-2 is a lot noisier than the CVX-1; it's not the soldering (I verified all the solder joints) and I don't think it's the sockets I used for the caps either (checked those too, removed/reinserted/wiggled caps etc). Indeed. The CVX-1 is very clean-sounding, where the CVX-2 is …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

Anyway, judging from your pictures, the clone seems to use 100k and 200k ohm resistors? no no --> 1002 == 10k Ohm and 2002 = 20kOhm. ---> So it rather uses values in the range of other clones. Ah you're right, good point! So they're an order of magnitude off compared to the real Covox. That would …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

That's why I wonder what kind of equipment people back in the Amiga days used. Most people used their 1084S monitor with built-in amp and speakers (or they connected to the TV, which obviously also had an amp and speakers built in). The Amiga had two cinch outputs, so it was also easy to conect to …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

Yeah the speaker smooths thing out, I will test once more with a small cap added . Keep in mind the speaker smoothing things out was not always desirable. It helps with low output rates but it hurts high output rates. Because the filter was in the speaker, in my opinion it should not be in the …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

The speaker's filtering was an intentional design choice for rounding the harshness off of speech signals and speech compression (it is, after all, called the Speech Thing). I don't like using the amplified speaker very much because of the filtering. Also, the Covox arrived on the market in 1986. …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

I recorded and volume balanced the three variations at the right moment when the noise floor is most significant. Clearly the 100k version is much quieter than the 7.5k version, but the real Covox is just slightly quieter than the 100k version. Thanks, that allows for a really nice comparison. And …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

So my current PC setup is not good for this this demo. Anyway here is the recorded video : https://youtu.be/mHumhIcgDPk To my ears, this sounds cleaner, especially in the 'softer' parts. The synths at the start of the second part of the demo now sound much less noisy than before (comparing to your …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

The demo is just two EXE files (CRYSTAL.EXE and DREAM.DAT), where the second file is called after the first one (it actually passes the selected audio device as switches the command line, and the second EXE has its own copy of the whole sound init and replay routines). So it does not perform any …

Re: half life 1 and voodoo2

Yea, for me anyway, I *need* the original Half-Life, because I want to run it on a PowerVR PCX2 with a MiniGL driver. Which implies that I need a version that runs on MiniGL. Which the Source engine does not. Only the original HL engine does. I think the same goes for the VooDoo2, although there are …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

Okay, here are all three of mine disassembled: https://goo.gl/photos/PGaVfpzbvTYyTGdB6 https://goo.gl/photos/NYfmWroJ71xD32e97 # This is the one I recorded the reference video with https://goo.gl/photos/MZzrVvLaJpD5waAe8 Great, many thanks for that! I am surprised at Covox #2. Looks like they had …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

Thanks for that, QBiN! I've never seen the insides of a Covox before. Apparently they put everything into a single package, so indeed, there's nothing to see there. I guess MobyGamer wouldn't have to open his Covoxes, because they'll likely look the same on the inside (even if there may be …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

Why not do that just to test? Play a single high quality 8-bit 44.1 or 48 kHz sample through the hardware just to see what it sounds like. It's actually surprising how close you can get to perceived CD quality within those constraints. If oversampling and noise shaping are also performed then you …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

yes sure, if you make a DAC that costs 30eur in parts then yes *maybe* it will sound as good... let's be realistic here LOL Dunno, the Covox seems to do it, and not at a super-high cost. Besides, the SB is actually pretty low quality. It's nowhere near the quality of a Pro Audio Spectrum, a GUS or …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

are you seriously comparing an LPTDAC device with Paula? c'mon man, this is not a dedicated DAC we are talking about, this is as simple as it gets - don't expect it to replace your soundblaster LOL LOL LOL Well, there's no reason why a DAC connected to an LPT can't sound as good a DAC on an SB, in …
