Turns out that this may be a bug with the game's sound driver. I tried it in PCem and the exact same issue occurs on Sound Blaster 1.5 or Pro, but not SB16.

All of Stéphane Picq's OPL2 work on the games Dune, KGB and Megarace is outstanding imo. Some of the best video game music ever made for sound cards with that chip. Dune and KGB also support MT-32, but the MT-32 versions sound nowhere near as good. He's probably one of my favorite video game music …

For me there is a performance difference. With Quake, I get 50fps with EDO RAM and 52fps with SDRAM (no sound, 320x200). Obviously stability is worth it over two extra frames, but it'd be nice. You also don't think the problem would be because I have PC-100 and not PC-66 sticks?

All the SDRAM I have laying around are 64mb PC-100 sticks. I think my motherboard officially supports up to 128 or 256mb, something like that. It only has two SDRAM slots and I don't see anything physically wrong with the board.

I just tried it with an SB16 and the cutscenes work much better (they now stay in sync, too). The audio isn't absolutely perfect, there are some occasional small stutters and clicks but looking at videos of the game on YouTube I think they may just be how the game always is. It's a bit of a shame …

I might temporarily take out the SB16 from my 486 and see if it works correctly with that card on this system soon. I know it runs with no sound issues using that card on my 486, though obviously game performance is much worse.
