I would take the cover off and unplug and replug all the connections you can. Could be that oxidation is just causing bad connections. That's really weird. I don't have a system with an M912 set up right now. I kinda got annoyed at that model due to lame issues with the BIOS. Do you have the AMI or Award BIOS? The AMI BIOS is better but neither were working with write-back cache mode for me.

Is this a drive you just hooked up? Are you sure the data cable is plugged in properly? Pin-1 on the cable needs to go to Pin-1 on the drive and Pin-1 on the IDE controller.
