Do you all forget that earlier versions of Windows had a built in OPL midi driver? So really, OPL was able to be used as a MIDI device back then.

Uggghhh.. built in audio is just "ok" if you don't really care about having good audio. There are still issues with mic inputs, sometimes you get interference and bus noise, etc. Been running mostly Creative cards since the Sound Blaster PCI 64. IMO, it's fine. An SB16 works for a 486 too, but doesn't do a heck of a lot that the SB Pro doesn't unless you're doing multimedia stuff in Windows. As far as MIDI.... I would just look at getting one of those new DIY MPU-401 clones rather than using hardware of the day. All those onboard MIDI …
