Not sure if your CPU is going to be able to handle MP3 decoding unless you have a hardware decoder as is mentioned in this thread: MP3 hardware decoding ISA cards Good luck finding one.

Software emulation of hardware for one. Large compiler un-optimizable switch statements are what hurts the speed of DOSBox quite a bit. Guessing that one of those uses code in DOSBox that is more optimized than the other.

CPU replacement is easy. And you should be able to harvest a CPU socket from pretty much any other socket 3 motherboard. Might as well upgrade it to a ZIF socket while you are at it. That being said, it would probably be easier/cheaper to get a replacement motherboard than to try to repair that one. …

Did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard? I have an X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Edition and a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P so I could try on my end. It really should just work as long as you have the chipset drivers installed. I also have multiple PCI X-Fi cards.

If you have v-sync disabled and/or you are CPU limited, it is perfectly normal for the CPU to be maxed out in a menu like that. What fps is the menu running at?

I don't think there are going to be any disadvantages. Only thing I can even think of that would not even be a disadvantage in your case is that there are no DOS drivers. The X-Fi will also not have 15-pin gameport capability, but that is a moot point with XP and up anyway since you could use a USB …
