Sounds like a voltage regulation problem. Have the capacitors been replaced? What exact power supply are you using and how old is it?

You'll get about the speed of a 1Mhz 8088 if you try to run it on a 486. OPL3 passthrough is doable though.

I have a Toshiba laptop that sports a regular Pentium 4 CPU and has a GeForce FX Go 5200. Fine for 98, but DOS sound is not there.

What are the rest of your system specs? Motherboard chipset plays a big roll in what PCI sound cards will work properly in DOS.

The big things are sound and video driver support. For Win98SE, you can go as high as GeForce 7xxx But for DOS sound, you are much more limited and will most likely need a PCMCIA sound card.

What OEM is the power supply? My guess is you are using a really old design power supply that isn't regulating properly. I generally won't use any power supply for a build that is not at least 80+ bronze and it must also have Active PFC.

440BX has AGP 2x but it works with AGP 8x cards (those that have 2 slits). GeForce FX5200 are dirt cheap, FX5500 also obtainable and cheap. No need to lash out on AWE64, those are very expensive. Once you get to a certain percentage of fragmented files, Windows can start acting funny. Just because the SSD doesn't care, doesn't mean that Windows can handle massive fragmentation as it sees it. There isn't anything specifically like that. What about getting a network card for your old laptop and then set up a share on the newer computer and copy stuff over that way? What kind of hardware would you need to have adequate speed for PCEM?
