On those machines the concern isn’t really heat on the GPU as much as mechanical stress - when you have a chip that large repeated mechanical stress on a chassis can cause cold solder fractures on the BGA balls. As far as I can see, even some 5.x versions work, but you probably want to follow the recommendations here and use 2.95.

Many things (not everything) can be changed inside DOSBox on the fly with built-in interpreter commands. So you can even use it in the batch files that run the games. I use it to change number of cycles or midiconfig, for example.

I'm a happy Winamp 2.x user on legacy systems myself. There is an mp3PRO plugin for it as well (and many other plugins).

A P4-HT will outperform an Athlon XP in most cases (although there is some overlap). I would go with Northwood P4-HT, not Prescott.
